Sacred Tours, Sandstone, and Divine Order

What began as a simple trip to purchase landscaping stone became unexpectedly one of those unforgettable experiences that quietly stays with you long after the day is over.
My friend Sandra and I headed to Mansfield, Ohio, to a property owned by a woman named Julie and her husband. They have created a remarkable place where builders and excavators bring enormous sandstone rocks unearthed during construction projects throughout the area.
Julie greeted us with such warmth and kindness that the property instantly felt sacred in its own quiet way. It was obvious she and her husband shared a deep respect for the Earth and the ancient sandstone. Julie spoke of the rocks not merely as landscaping materials, but as pieces of living history shaped by time, water, and nature itself. Her welcoming spirit and reverence for the stones created an atmosphere of peace, appreciation, and connection from the moment we arrived.
I had no idea what I was about to see...
I stood stunned at the beauty surrounding us. Massive sandstone formations rested across the property like ancient sculptures shaped by time itself. Julie explained that much of the earth in the Mansfield area is rich with sandstone formed from ancient ocean beds that once covered Ohio long ago.
And suddenly it all made sense.
The markings.
The ripples.
The layers.
The flowing patterns etched into the stone.
These rocks were carrying the memory of water, pressure, movement, and time.
I found myself touching stones that had been formed over millions of years — each one holding the visible imprint of nature’s long and patient artistry.
Julie even shared that sandstone from the area had once been purchased and shipped internationally for architectural projects. Ohio pink sandstone has a long history as a valued building stone. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, stone from Ohio was used throughout the United States in homes, churches, and public buildings. Records show that Ohio sandstone and related stone goods were shipped abroad, including to Europe and other parts of the world, where it contributed to the construction and craftsmanship of significant architecture for their churches and palaces.
Another adventure began on the way home.
A traffic accident on Interstate 71 forced us to search for an alternate route. That should have been
simple enough — except both of our phones began giving completely opposite directions.
Mine said:
“Turn right.”
Sandra’s said:
“Turn left.”
Again and again.
At one point we were laughing so hard we could barely think straight. We became wonderfully lost in that strange way life sometimes reroutes us when we least expect it.
And somehow — despite the confusion, detours, and contradictory instructions — we ended up safely ahead of the traffic jam entirely.
Just before getting back on the highway, we stopped for gas. The cost for half a tank came to exactly $46.46. Sandra immediately looked at me and said:
“That’s a sign.”
Earlier that morning, the Unity Daily Word had focused on the phrase:
“Divine Order.”
And honestly, the entire day began to feel like a living reflection of that message... because perhaps Divine Order does not always look orderly in the moment.
Sometimes Divine Order looks like:
unexpected detours,
confusing directions,
wrong turns,
laughter,
delays,
ancient stones,
and arriving safely anyway.
The experience stayed with me because it mirrored something I have been learning deeply in my own life. We spend so much energy trying to force certainty, control outcomes, and perfectly navigate every situation.
Yet some of the most meaningful moments arrive when we surrender enough to simply experience the
journey itself.
The sandstone became its own quiet metaphor.
These stones were not formed quickly.
They were shaped slowly —
through pressure,
water,
time,
erosion,
movement,
and patience.
And perhaps human beings are formed much the same way.
Our lives leave layers.
Our struggles leave markings.
Our experiences shape us in ways we often do not fully understand until much later.
What if the detours are not interruptions of life… but part of the path itself?
What if confusion occasionally opens us to wonder?
What if laughter during uncertainty is its own form of spiritual trust?
And what if the soul sometimes recognizes meaning long before the mind can explain it?
By the time Sandra and I arrived home, I realized the day had never really been about landscaping stone at all.
It had been about presence.
Friendship.
Discovery.
Surrender.
Ancient wisdom.
And learning, once again, that life often unfolds beautifully when we stop trying to control every turn in the road.
Perhaps that is what Divine Order truly is.
Not a perfectly predictable path —
but the mysterious grace that somehow carries us forward through every sacred detour along the way.
