A Gentle Word Before We Begin

Dear Friends,

Last month, I wrote about prayer for oneself—the often-overlooked practice of turning inward to listen, align, and restore. I didn’t know then how timely that message would become for me.

On December 14, I drove myself to the emergency room after weeks of knowing something wasn’t right and feeling unheard along the way. Emergency surgery followed, and I spent the next twelve days receiving care, resting, and allowing my body and spirit to recover. I am now home, supported by health care and making steady progress.

During that time, I did exactly what we’re reminded to do on an airplane: put on my own oxygen mask first. Prayer—for clarity, courage, guidance, and healing—became not just something I taught, but something I lived. It steadied my mind, strengthened my trust, and helped me take the next right steps when they mattered most.

This month, we turn our attention to prayer for others. My recent experience has deepened my understanding of how powerful prayer can be—not only when offered for ourselves, but when spoken clearly, lovingly, and intentionally for another. There is a quiet strength in simple, sincere prayer, and it doesn’t require special words or training—only presence and heart. Read my blog below for more on this.

I look forward to sharing more reflections and learnings with you during our Circle of Freedom Zoom on January 20, where we’ll explore how prayer can support, uplift, and truly serve others in practical and meaningful ways. I hope you’ll join me.

With gratitude for your care and connection,

Barbara

the sacred practice of praying for others

Praying for Others

Prayer... from Celebrations to Concerns

In recent years, I’ve noticed a shift in how we respond to one another’s challenges. Whether it’s an email, text, or Facebook post sharing something painful—emotional, mental, or physical—I always hope that I will respond with words that genuinely console or uplift. Yet what I see most often are brief comments that say, “sending prayers.”

And I find myself wondering:

What does that actually mean?

Was a prayer spoken?

Was a moment taken?

Did words of hope, comfort, or affirmation rise within the heart?

I don’t ask these questions in judgment, but with curiosity. Most people have never been taught how to pray in a simple, meaningful way. They care deeply, but may not know what to say. ... Click Here to Read More of this Month's Blog Post!
