BECOME YOUR own best advocate
Intentional self-care is not indulgence. It is not selfish. It is the courageous decision to honor your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being—even when it feels unfamiliar or uncomfortable.
What begins as intentional self-care often deepens into something more sacred: reverent self-care — the quiet practice of honoring the life you’ve been given.
Recently I noticed that something I genuinely love—keeping my home clean and organized—can also become a distraction from caring for my health. For me, tending my home is an act of gratitude, a kind of worship and thanksgiving for the blessings surrounding me. Yet I saw that I was sometimes spending so much time caring for my environment that I was neglecting the care of the body I live in. Choosing to put my health protocols first felt uncomfortable... Today I celebrated my 82nd birthday surrounded by family and a close friend here at my home — and my heart is full. We shared a simple but joyful feast of rib-eye Delmonico steaks, egg salad, and baked potatoes, followed by laughter around the table as we played Skyjo Action and SWOOP card games together. These are the moments that remind me how rich life truly is.
Before dinner, my son offered a blessing that touched me deeply. His words were not only for the food and those gathered, but also for my surgeon and for the upcoming surgery that lies ahead. Unlike the emergency of December, this next procedure does not hold the same level of urgency. A plan is in place — yet it is a meaningful milestone on my road to recovery. Hearing his prayer wrapped around that truth filled me with peace and reassurance.
Beautiful flowers, birthday cards, and heartfelt texts filled with love and encouragement made this day especially precious, reminding me how deeply supported I am by all of my friends.
Tonight I feel especially grateful — for my life, for my healing body, for steady recovery, for my beloved family and friends, and for the skilled and caring hands of my surgeon and my medical team. I am aware that every year is a gift, and this one feels particularly sacred. Life is looking good!
At 82, I am not counting years — I am honoring them.
