July 2026: Tomorrow is Still Unwritten

Recently, I visited a back specialist hoping to discover whether there was something new causing the
pain and muscle spasms that had suddenly disrupted my life.
After reviewing my CT scan, he looked at me and said, "There is nothing new here."
In one sense, that was good news. No new fracture. No new crisis. No emergency surgery.
What he did see was a collection of findings that have appeared repeatedly on CT scans and X-rays over
the years, along with the natural wear and tear that can accompany eighty-two years of living.
His conclusion was simple. The recent pain was likely an aggravation of old conditions combined with
activity that exceeded what my body was prepared to handle.
Then he surprised me.
Rather than focusing only on the pain, he became concerned about what lay ahead.
He strongly encouraged me to meet with a rheumatologist and explore options for strengthening my
bones. His message was clear: "Let's reduce the chances of the next fracture rather than simply reacting
after it happens."
My daughter accompanied me to the appointment, and as we drove home, I found myself reflecting on
two very different ways of looking at reality.
One approach says, "This is how things are, and this is how they will always be."
The other says, "This is how things are today, but tomorrow is still unwritten."
The first view often feels heavy and final. The second feels open and alive.
Neither denies reality.
The pain is real.
The findings are real.
The limitations are real.
Yet possibility is real as well.
What if reality is not a prison but a snapshot?
What if today's circumstances are simply our current experience rather than our permanent identity?
Many of us have been taught to accept a diagnosis as though it were carved in stone. We hear a
prognosis and unconsciously decide that our future has already been determined.
But life has shown me otherwise.
I have experienced unexpected healing.
I have watched people recover beyond expectations.
I have seen new treatments emerge.
I have witnessed attitudes change, relationships heal, and opportunities appear where none seemed possible.
Reality tells me where I am.
Possibility reminds me that I do not yet know all that may unfold.
Perhaps wisdom is learning to hold both.
To acknowledge what is true today while remaining open to what could be true tomorrow.
To respect the facts without surrendering to them.
To honor the diagnosis without making it our destiny.
For me, this is not wishful thinking. It is not pretending that difficulties do not exist. It is not spiritual
denial.
It is the understanding that there is more to life than what we can presently see.
Some call it possibility.
Some call it faith.
Some call it grace.
Some call it consciousness.
Whatever words we use, it is the recognition that life is continually unfolding and that we do not yet know all that is possible.
The way we see ourselves, the stories we tell ourselves, and the possibilities we allow ourselves to
imagine influence how we experience our journey.
As I reflected on all of this, another thought came to me.
Part of remaining open to possibility is learning to forgive ourselves.
I cannot change what I did not know twenty, forty, or sixty years ago.
I made decisions based on the information, understanding, beliefs, and experiences available to me at the time.
Today I know more.
Today I understand more.
Today I see connections I could not see before.
That is not a reason for regret.
Rather than criticizing my younger self, I choose compassion.
I choose to thank the woman who carried me this far.
She did the best she could with the awareness she had.
And now, with greater understanding, I simply continue forward.
I choose to love and trust my Creator God.
I choose to love and trust my body, even when it struggles.
I choose to love others, recognizing that they too are learning as they go.
And I choose to continue sharing what I learn, not because I have reached the destination, but because
the lessons gathered along the way may help illuminate the path for someone else.
Perhaps wisdom is not arriving at a place where we know everything.
Perhaps wisdom is becoming willing to learn, grow, forgive, and remain open to new possibilities for as
long as we are given breath.
I do not know exactly how my back will feel six months from now.
I do not know how quickly my wound will heal.
I do not know what new solutions may appear.
But I do know this:
As long as I am breathing, I choose to remain open to possibility.
Reality tells me where I am today.
Possibility reminds me that the story is still being written.
