What Really Matters

Do you remember when you were a child the saying that went like this? “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, if we didn’t know it then, we surely know it now-words have the power to lift-up, and they also have the power to destroy!

These past weeks I’ve become keenly aware of the painful thoughts that are more than too often trapping one’s health and happiness. I have spoken to adults who themselves are worried beyond belief about the chaos, negativity and the apparent darkness in their lives. I have spoken to adults whose children and grandchildren are also living in that same world. The worry over their life’s concerns, rejections, competition, relationships, etc. has led to depression, anxiety, anorexia and one diagnosed suicidal.

Yes, life is tough, and consider now how potentially damaging the stress of negative thoughts and words can be to our bodies. They either work for us or against us. We must use caution! Thoughts and words that are hopeful, life-giving, compassionate, caring and loving are so critical to surviving and thriving. We need to watch what’s going-on inside our own heads, and seek to encourage others to think positively about their innate value and essence. If you are not personally affected at this time, are you aware of these current statistics?

  • 1 in 10 Americans are on antidepressants.

  • Over 40 million people have anxiety.

  • Over 20 million more have depression.

After several coaching sessions, these past few weeks, I prayerfully asked for a few thoughts that might be comforting to someone and asked that each of those adults/children might receive really good, holistic support. I prayed that they would know their value, know that they are loved and know how best to care for themselves.

Then yesterday one of my fabulous, former Nature’s Sunshine travel companions and seminar supporters of many years announced his retirement. In making that announcement he wanted us to know what he believes and the basis from which he lives his life. As I contemplated the work that he quoted (Living the Gospel Joyful, by Dieter F. Uchdort), I felt that maybe this is what we need to remember for ourselves and to speak to others, especially those who are facing struggles or just a tough day.

Although from our individual spiritual perspective we may word these thoughts somewhat differently, we would share the same belief in Unconditional Love. My friend quoted this: “My dear sisters and brothers in the gospel, whether you are 8 or 108, there is one thing that I hope you truly understand and know. You are loved! You are dear to your Heavenly Father. The infinite and eternal Creator of light and life knows you! He is mindful of you! Yes, God loves you this very day and always. God is not waiting to love you until you have overcome your weaknesses and bad habits. He loves you today with a full understanding of your struggles. God is aware that you reach up to him in heartfelt and hopeful prayer. He knows of the times you have held onto the fading light and believed-even in the midst of growing darkness. He knows of your sufferings. He knows of your remorse for the times you have fallen short or failed. And still he loves you. And God knows of your successes; though they may seem small to you, God acknowledges and cherishes each one of them. God loves you for extending yourself to others. He loves you for reaching out and helping others bear their heavy burdens-even when you are struggling with your own. God knows everything about you! God sees you as you really are. And He loves you-today and always.

From your spiritual insight you might word this somewhat differently, but what I’m inviting you to consider is this:

1.) Can you speak the Truth of Unconditional Love for yourself and others?

2.) How might you share the idea of Innate Value and Unconditional Love with others today?

What Really Matters is that You Know You Are Loved!
