Many years ago a friend and I attended a seminar at Ursuline College in Cleveland given by the then-popular writer Scott Peck. I was not in a particularly “good space” in my life, and I attended with the hope of being inspired. I became an avid reader of Scott Peck and probably underlined every sentence. “Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult--once we truly understand and accept it--then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.” Scott Peck This made so much sense to me! At times I would feel at my wits end, and yet I was sure that there must be a new way of thinking and being, but I wasn’t sure how I was going to get there. One day I would feel strong and another I would feel lost.
Based on Scott Peck my mantra became, “Understand, Accept, Transcend”. How would I do that? I became a follower of this author at about the same time that I was absorbing Unity Truth Teachings; both brought me new thoughts, new awareness, new feelings, and a refreshing way of experiencing life. This was a time of “waking up” to my own responsibilities about how my life was going. I remember listening over and over to a popular song on the radio as I explored Scott Peck and Unity. I sang it until I decided to make the changes that I needed to make. If I was going to have a different experience, I was going to need to think new thoughts and make new decisions. Do you remember those words of Diana Ross in “Do You Know Where You’re Going to?” (That’s hard for a former English teacher to say. ;))
“Do you know where you're going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? Where are you going to, do you know? Do you get what you're hoping for? When you look behind you there's no open door. What are you hoping for, do you know? Once we were standing still in time, Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds. And you knew how I loved you but my spirit was free, Laughing at the questions that you once asked of me. Do you know where you're going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? Where are you going to, do you know? Now looking back at all we planned, We let so many dreams just slip through our hands. Why must we wait so long before we see How sad the answers to those questions can be? Do you know where you're going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? Where are you going to, do you know? Do you get what you're hoping for? When you look behind you there's no open door.”
Diana Ross
I took Scott Peck, Unity and Diana Ross very seriously! I went to work on me, and I will never look back! Why? Because I was the one responsible for my thinking, feeling and results. You and I have the power to understand, accept and transcend. Life is difficult, so what! In spite of circumstances we can all make new decisions, fulfill hopes and dreams, and look ahead to the limitless open doors for new opportunities. I didn’t say it was easy at first, but it actually became easy and was definitely worth it. Having retired now as Unity minister at Unity of Medina, I find that I can best serve others as they too come to know and like where they are going. My new position is serving independently as a Whole Life Coach, and if you feel the urge to make new decisions for your life, I invite you to contact me.
You deserve that which you desire!
